Project Summary

ARIANNA Project aims at contributing to prevent the risk of natural disasters, in particular of flood, increasingly affecting rich but fragile environmental systems of the Programme area, by releasing the unexpressed potential of Nature Based Solutions (NBS). The latter can provide environmental, social and economic benefits: they are not only about “conservation”, but rather related to the well-being of ecosystems involving different actions and policies based on the “power of nature”. Therefore, focusing on NBS, ARIANNA Project envisages: -Joint Transnational Strategy on Climate Resilience, an integrated framework including transnational guidelines and specific actions based on NBS, to be tested within the Pilots. - Transnational NBS Pilot actions: representing an in-depth application of the Joint Strategy, articulated in: - Lamination Tank Pilot foreseeing combined interventions favor the hydrological invariance with a shift in hydrological balances towards infiltrations and evapotranspiration at the expense of surface runoff, reducing heat island phenomena; - Tools for multi-risk vulnerability assessment and NBS practices, addressing combined effects of earthquake risk and land take due to urbanization on the flood defense infrastructures pilot sites; - Enhancing Firefighters' Capabilities for Flood Response Pilot, combining flood response training for firefighters, procurement of specialized flood rescue equipment, and establishment of coordination mechanisms. The Pilots will follow a monitoring process leading to a Transnational Join Position Paper, as a tool to be integrated in further strategies focused on NBS to prevent the risk of flooding and other climate disasters. - Arianna NBS Network by signing an MoU, enriched by Capacity building activities to increase awareness on NBS and a Digital Knowledge Hub, as a repository and permanent discussion forum to facilitate exchange of best practices, transferability of project outputs and its continuity.
